A few exciting and let’s face it, tragically hip things going on this weekend!

Last night was the Sydney Art Music & Culture awards, hosted by FBi at Carriageworks. I am so proud that our 2012 Sydney Fringe Festival project, Mystery Bus was nominated for an award.  Its a great recognition of the hard work that we put into the event, and I would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who voted for us!

The glamorous Mystery Bus Production Team!

Placed in the mysterious ‘Remix the City’ category, we were up against some pretty serious competition, including City of Sydney’s Food Trucks and Kino’s Secret Cinema. Though we didn’t take home an award, a good time was had by all! Bring on 2013 bitches!

Now I’ve flown off to Hobart, for some more trendy action. MONA (The Museum of Old and New Art) has been reported by many as the best museum in the whole world. This weekend I’ll visiting during the week of their annual festival, MOFO. I am squee-ing with excitement!

In particular I’m down to see and support at secret show that will be happening on Saturday night at Faux Mo, the festival nightclub. Its going to be amazing! But I can’t say any more right now, because Shhhh! Its a secret! More info and pictures to come later.

SMAC the Mystery Bus

Yes, its official.

Our Sydney Fringe Festival event series, Mystery Bus, has been nominated for a SMAC award!

We are so very thrilled to be in the running for the absolute hippest award in town. And to be on the guest list for one hell of a party!

The Sydney Arts, Music and Culture Awards are a recognition of local Sydney culture makers who innovate, create and celebrate the city. The Mystery Bus was an incredible project that I’ve been co-producing for a couple of years. A tripped out city bus takes unsuspecting punters to weird and wonderful underground venues for a delightfully eclectic mix of film, antiques, carnies and carnage. In my opinion, the event photos alone are worth and award!

We’re listed against some tough competition (and worthy opponents) in the ‘Remix the City’ category (I told you it was hip).

Burlesque with Christa and Vashti Hughes

Wowzers! The Hughes family is certainly a formidable one, oozing with talent.

For the last week of the Mystery Bus we teamed up with the good folks at Camelot Lounge for an extravaganza of cabaret, music and burlesque. The hot little venue was packed and the acts on stage were even hotter. The night was mc-ed by the hilarious Drew Fairley, including his much loved ‘Hotel California Sketch’ to great laughs and applause. The world infamous Christa Hughes busted out a few classic favourites as well as the obligatory raunch, ridiculously sexy costumes and dirty gags. If you haven’t seen her yet, you haven’t really lived.

Vashti Hughes added to the cabaret mix and even gave us a preview of her fantastic show ‘Mum’s In‘. This is showing NOW at a sumptuous new venue, the Bordello Theatre in the King’s Cross Hotel. The one woman show chronicles the rivalry between the two real life Sydney underworld femme fatales, Tilly Devine and Kate Leigh. Both hilarious, chair gripping and informative, this show is on every Sunday at 5pm and is not to be missed!

Finally the night was topped off with a spot of messy burlesque with yours truly, Thunderkat and Geronimo providing a bit of respite entertainment. Banana split was on the menu 😉

A huge thank you to everyone who helped to make this possible! We had so much fun, and received nothing but positive feedback and good vibes from the other performers, audience and crew. Thanks again!

Mystery Bus 2012 Wrap Up

Last week we wrapped up another successful season of Mystery Bus for the Sydney Fringe Festival. Once again sell-out crowds were wowed by a showcase of some of Sydney’s best underground artists and venues across eight themed nights. The bus arrived to greet unsuspecting punters outside the Enmore Theatre and took them to different secret locations each night for a surprise smorgasbord of entertainment.

Some quick stats:

471 punters
12 musicians
3 burlesque performers
3 cabaret stars
101 camels
49 roller girls
4 professional perverts
2 film fanatics
70 drink prizes to the sly fox
1 bus driver
8 local artist cd giveaways
& 1 taro reader!

This year we received some fantastic media coverage, most notably in Time Out Magazine;

“Nothing could have prepared us for the kinkiness that ensued.. the Mystery Bus delivered on its promise to excite and surprise.”

We were listed in Concrete Playground‘s top ten Fringe Shows.

And Arts Hub said that we had; “some of the freakier things the fringe world has to offer.”

Mystery Bus 2012

So its clown car time again! Just spent about 5 hours shooting promotional photos and film for Mystery Bus 2012. Managed to shove a vintage globe, Swiss ball, animal masks, fake flowers, two old school suitcases, THREE mannequins, novelty golf clubs and a hula hoop into the back of the van.

The shoot was excellent fun, with half of Claudi’s family showing up and jumping in too. Her uncle had literally just arrived from Wales by plane and her grandmother was looking fabulous, so it all came together nicely. Can’t wait to show you the results!

For the moment check out our new designs in pretty teal courtesy of the amazing Reese Geronimo. (pictured below as the hipster bear)

The Fringe program launches on August 6 so watch this space for more details!
